IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The charts illustrate age of Little Chalfont library members and the percentage of total loans by category in 2016, also, the bar chart compared the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, we notice that more than half members of the library are adults between 18 and 64. In contrast, adults over 65 years old have the less present.
Initially, it's clearly that most loans in 2016 was made in two categories, children's fiction and adult fiction. In the opposit, less loans was in children's DVD's by only 1%.In addition, young adults and adult audio books by 2%.
Furthermore, we can obviously see that the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016 was fluctuated, starting by the low point of 16.000 loans in 2007 to reach the peak of 17000 loans in 2016.
To conclude, loans number has increased till 2016. Children and adults between 18 an 64 register the highest member's age, remaining also the highest loans member by 38% for both.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important features, including the largest membership group and the two leading loan categories, and you provide an overview. However, some key information is inaccurate: the loan total rises to about 21,700 in 2016, not 17,000, and the chart shows an overall increase with fluctuations rather than a low point followed by the stated peak. The membership figures are also misreported in the conclusion: children account for 22%, while adults aged 18–64 account for 51%; these are not the two highest groups at 38%. You omit useful comparisons such as the relatively steady high loan totals after 2010. More accurate reporting and a fuller overview of the three visuals would make the response more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details about loan categories and yearly totals. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. However, the progression is weakened by the brief, disconnected treatment of the charts: membership is mentioned in the overview and conclusion, while the yearly figures receive only one sentence. Linking phrases such as “Initially,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” are sometimes mechanical or do not clearly signal the relationship between ideas. The conclusion also repeats information rather than bringing the main comparisons together. Grouping related details into clearer paragraphs and using more precise links between the visuals would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “total loans,” “categories,” “peak,” and “members,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the report awkward: “the less present,” “the opposit,” and “loans number” do not express the intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “DVD's” and “an 18,” and repeated use of general phrases like “we notice” and “we can obviously see.” Aim for precise chart language, such as “accounted for,” “the smallest share,” and “fluctuated,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “adults between 18 and 64” and a participle phrase in “starting by the low point.” However, errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “more than half members … are adults” is missing an article, while “most loans … was made” has subject–verb agreement and passive-form problems. The sentence beginning “Furthermore” also has an unclear construction, and punctuation is inconsistent, as in “1%.In addition.” Work on articles, agreement, and complete sentence structure, and use past tense consistently when describing the 2016 data.
