IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The different graphs show information related to a public library located in Liitle Chalfont town in 2016.
The pay chart gives the proportion of the library members categorized by age. The number of adults between 18-64 years old covers the 51% of the total amount of members, following with the 22% corresponding to children (younger than 13 year old). And in the last place are the adults over 65 years old.
Next to that chart, the table illustrates the total loans by category, where, in this case, children's fiction and adult fiction share the same number of loans, with 38% each of the total. In contrast, the lowest category is the children's DVDs with only 1% of the total number.
Finally, tha bar chart demostrates the time series of the total number of loans in the period [redacted phone]. And it can be observed that by the year 2007 the number barely passed 15,000 loans, a low quantity in comparision with 2011 and 2016 years when the amount of loans exceeds 20,000 loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover all three visuals and identify several relevant features, including the 51% share of members aged 18–64, the equal 38% shares for children’s and adult fiction, and the low point for children’s DVDs. You also correctly contrast the 2007 total with the figures above 20,000 in 2011 and 2016. However, the overview is limited: the response does not clearly summarise the overall pattern in loans, which rose overall despite fluctuations, or the age-group distribution beyond naming selected groups. Some details are also incomplete: the 15% share for young adults and the 12% share for members aged 65 and over are not both reported, and the loan trend is described only through a few years. A clearer overview and fuller comparisons would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence, moving from the membership chart to the category table and then to the bar chart. Paragraph breaks and signposts such as “Next to that chart” and “Finally” help readers follow the three sources of information. This gives the report a logical progression. Some linking is rather mechanical, however, and the final paragraph mainly lists selected years rather than connecting them into a clear trend. The opening also introduces the visuals without an overview of their main message. To strengthen cohesion, group related comparisons and use links that show contrast or change over time, such as explaining that loans fluctuated after rising from 2007, before ending at their highest level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “categorized by age,” “total loans,” and “time series.” These choices make the subject clear, and the reader can understand the comparisons you intend. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “pay chart” for the pie chart, “covers the 51%,” and “a low quantity” for a figure. There are also spelling errors in “Liitle,” “tha,” “demostrates,” and “comparision.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Use standard chart terminology and check spelling carefully; for example, “accounted for” is more natural than “covers” when describing a percentage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with subordinate clauses, and most of the intended meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “covers the 51% of the total amount” uses an unnecessary article and an awkward grammatical pattern; “following with the 22%” is not a complete, natural construction. In “when the amount of loans exceeds 20,000 loans,” the tense does not fit the past period being described. The opening phrase “The different graphs show information related to…” is understandable but could be more direct. Practise accurate comparative structures and past-tense reporting, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
