IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The little Chalfont Library shows the percentages of total number of loans by categories starting from year [redacted phone]. The bar graph provides information that is from year [redacted phone] and it shows that the number of loans have been significantly increased. It illustrates that in year 2007 the amount of loan was around more than 15,000. However, in years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2016 has been increased immensely. The year 2007 has the lowest number of loans. Although, the bar chart shows that the year 2016 had the highest number of loans and the number mentioned is more than 20,000.
Moreover, it also shows the age of the library members at Little Chalfont Library during 2016. The pie graph shows the total number of adults aged from 18-64 are 51 in number. However, there are young adults as well aged from 13-17 and they are 15 in total. If we talk about children, it is mentioned that 22 of them were children as library members. Furthermore, they have also mentioned the total number of loans by category from 2016. The highest number that is mentioned is 38 percent and it is similar for children's fiction and adult fiction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several relevant features, including the rise in total loans and the matching 38% shares for children’s and adult fiction. However, the overview is incomplete: the loans did not increase steadily, but fluctuated after 2010, and the response does not describe the overall pattern clearly. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: 2008 and 2009 were both about 19,000, so they were not increases over the previous year, and the member figures are percentages, not numbers of people (“51 in number”). You also omit the substantial adult non-fiction share and the smaller loan categories, as well as the 65-and-over member group. Select the main comparisons and report the figures accurately to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into two paragraphs and moves from the loans chart to the membership and category information, so the reader can identify the broad topics. However, the progression within the first paragraph is not consistently clear: several years are listed as having increased without explaining the changes, and the overview is mixed with individual details. Connectors such as “However,” “Although,” and “Moreover” are used repeatedly, sometimes without expressing a clear contrast; for example, “Although” begins a sentence that does not complete a contrasting idea. Organise the response around a concise overview followed by grouped details, and use linking words only where their relationship is accurate. This would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bar graph,” “pie graph,” “library members,” and “loans by category,” and the main subject remains understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repetitive. “The amount of loan” is not a natural way to describe the chart’s figures, while “increased immensely” overstates changes that are relatively modest. Repeating “shows” and “mentioned” also makes the description less precise. Choose vocabulary that distinguishes totals, proportions, and trends—for example, describe the loan total as rising or fluctuating, and refer to the membership figures as percentages. More accurate collocations would improve clarity and make the report sound more appropriate for an academic chart summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt some longer sentences and use time references to describe the charts, but control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. For example, “the number of loans have been significantly increased” has a subject–verb agreement error and an unsuitable verb construction; “the number of loans has increased” would be more accurate. The clause “in years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2016 has been increased” is also incomplete and lacks a clear subject. Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or awkward, as in “in year 2007” and “aged from 18-64.” Use a wider mix of accurate simple and complex sentences, checking agreement, tense, and complete clause structure. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general topic, but they reduce precision.
