IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pucblic library chart shows clear view of percentages with a large range of age groups from children to adults 65 and over. Additionally, there are three different charts which are pie chart, graph, and category based on 2016.
In the pie chart, adults 18-64 takes the largest part of the pie chart which is 51 percentage. Therefore, I can elaborte that adults are significant members of Little Chalfont Library. In terms of category, children's fiction and Adult fiction are taking 38 percentage which is the biggest number, but children's DVDs is the smallest accroding to the chart.
In the bar graph shows the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016. From 2013 to 2016 the number of loans has been increased gradually from 17,000 to 22,000. However, from 2011 to 2013, the number of loans has been rapidly decreased from 21.000 to 17.000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify relevant features, including the largest membership group (adults aged 18–64, at 51%) and the equal 38% shares for children’s and adult fiction. However, the response only partially summarises the visuals: it gives no figures for the other age groups and little detail about the loan categories, and it lacks a clear overview of the main patterns across all three charts. The loan trend is also misreported: loans rose from about 19,600 in 2013 to 21,700 in 2016, not from 17,000 to 22,000; the 2011–2013 fall was to about 19,600, not 17,000. The response is five words below the required minimum. Include a concise overview and report the key figures accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable order: it introduces the visuals, discusses membership and loan categories, then turns to the time-series graph. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “In terms of” and “However” show an attempt to connect information. At times, though, the organisation feels list-like rather than comparative, and the opening mainly names the chart types instead of presenting the overall picture. The reference “In the bar graph” is also awkwardly connected to the sentence that follows. A clearer overview followed by one paragraph on membership and categories and another on loan trends would make the progression more purposeful and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentages,” “age groups,” “category” and “total number of loans,” so the reader can follow the subject. However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “clear view of percentages,” “largest part of the pie chart,” and “biggest number” are not natural ways to describe chart data. Spelling errors such as “pucblic,” “elaborte” and “accroding” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise reporting language such as “accounted for,” “proportion” and “loan total,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description more fluent and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, including “However, from 2011 to 2013, the number of loans has been rapidly decreased…”. Some sentence patterns communicate the intended meaning, but errors in agreement, articles and verb forms remain noticeable. For example, “adults 18-64 takes” should use a plural verb, while “children’s fiction and Adult fiction are taking” uses an unsuitable progressive form for describing fixed chart data. The phrase “In the bar graph shows” is missing a grammatical subject, and “has been rapidly decreased” is not a correct passive construction. Use straightforward past-tense or present-tense reporting consistently, and check that each sentence has a complete subject and verb.
