Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify several relevant features, including the two largest loan categories (children’s and adult fiction, both 38%), the smallest category (children’s DVDs, 1%), and the largest and smallest membership age groups. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the charts or adequately summarise the loan trend over time. The statement that loans were highest at about 22,000 in 2016 and lowest at 16,000 in 2007 is broadly accurate, but the changes between years are not described. Some chart details are also confused: the age figures are percentages, while the line chart shows loan totals. The response is 146 words, below the 150-word minimum. Develop a concise overview and compare the main patterns across all three displays.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with “First of all” and “Secondly” introducing different points, and the reader can identify some of the figures being discussed. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the charts are not clearly distinguished: for example, “there is mention one table” is followed by a description of the line graph’s axes. The opening and closing sentences add little information, and “After both comparisons both mention…” does not communicate a clear conclusion. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” are used, but they do not consistently show the relationship between ideas. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key details, identify each visual accurately, and connect comparisons directly to the figures they describe.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of task-related terms, including “total loans,” “age of library members,” “highest,” and “lowest,” so the general subject is recognisable. However, vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “most below value,” “loans of number,” and “both comparisons both mention.” Repeated use of “mention” also makes the description imprecise. Spelling errors, including “Futhermore” and “Addtionally,” further reduce control. Aim for accurate chart language and a wider range of comparison verbs, such as “accounted for,” “represented,” “rose,” and “fluctuated.” Check spelling and use natural collocations when describing proportions and totals.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to combine information in longer sentences, but sentence structures are mostly simple or incomplete, and frequent errors make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “The chart illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, while “there is one pie chart table” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “for public library” and “the childrens fiction.” Punctuation and capitalisation are weak: the opening runs into the next sentence after “chalfont.”, and several sentences lack spaces after full stops. Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, check agreement and articles, and punctuate each chart description separately. More accurate control of these basic patterns is needed for clearer reporting.
