Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart, table, and bar graph describes information about Little Chalfont library in 2016. In the table the most loan 38% was took in children's and adult fiction while the nominal 1% loan was took for children's DVDs. As in the bar graph the greatest number of loans were acquired in 2016 however the lowest was in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three visuals and provide a clear overview: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and loans are highest in 2016 and lowest in 2007. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 22% of child members, the 15% of young adults, and the 38% shares for both fiction categories. The overview is relevant, though the claim that loans “kept on increasing year by year” is inaccurate: the total fluctuates after 2010, with declines in 2012 and 2013. Some details are also unclear or imprecise, such as saying 2010 and 2012 both had 20,500 loans. More precise reporting of the trend and key values would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening overview is followed by details about membership, loan categories, and the trend over time. This helps the reader identify which chart is being discussed. However, progression is not consistently clear. The first paragraph combines several overview points, while the later paragraphs move between categories and years without a strong organising pattern. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand” do not express a clear contrast between the figures that follow, and “As in the bar graph” is an awkward transition. Group the membership and category data separately, then describe the loan trend chronologically, using comparisons to connect related figures rather than relying on repeated chart references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “library members,” “adult non-fiction,” “loans,” and “decreased,” so the main subject and figures are generally understandable. There is some variety in how you describe the visuals, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “most aged library members,” “the most loan … was took,” and “loans were granted” do not describe the data appropriately. “Nominal” is also not a natural way to characterise the smallest share. These choices sometimes make the reader work to interpret your meaning. Aim for precise reporting language such as “largest proportion,” “accounted for,” and “the number of loans rose/fell,” and check that verbs fit the process being described.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “whereas” and “on the other hand.” However, errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “The pie chart, table, and bar graph describes” needs plural agreement, while “38% was took” has an incorrect passive verb form. “Young adults aging between 13 to 17 comprised of 15%” also has faulty structure, and “the least number were the adults” does not maintain agreement. Some sentences, such as “Number of loans decreased to 19000 in the year 2013,” are more controlled. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simpler grammatical patterns before adding complex clauses.
