IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given chart illustrates the information of membership about a public library in a town which is called little challfont. The little chalfont library is a public library which tells total loans by category (2016), as well as age of library members.
In the first, it tells us about the total loans by category. Adult fiction and children's fiction are 38% loans. The most lowest loan is children's DVDs. The remaining is also in the mid of this as children's non fiction is only 6% and adult non fiction is about 13%. So the remaining is about 1% or 2%.
Now, it also gives us age of library members. The most popular or proportion age is the adults from 18 to 64. They are very large percent of age as 51%. The lower age from adults is children's it is about 22%. Furthermore, the next is young adults aged from 13 to 17 and it is 15%. The last one is adults from aged 65 and over is 12%.
Finally, it also gives chart of total number of loans ([redacted phone]). The y-axis shows the number of loans and the x-axis shows the number of years. So, the year of 2016 had the highest number of loans it is approximately 22,000. As in the year of 2007 it had the lowest number of loans is only 15,000. So, the year of 2010 or 2011 are the approximately among 21,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover all three visuals and report several key figures accurately, including the equal 38% shares for adult and children’s fiction, the 51% share of members aged 18–64, and the rise in loans to about 22,000 in 2016. However, the response does not give a clear overall summary of the main patterns: for example, it could state that adults form the largest membership group and that annual loans generally increased despite fluctuations. Some details are unclear or incomplete. “The remaining is about 1% or 2%” groups together categories that also include 2% and 13%, while the loans trend is reduced to a few selected years rather than describing the fluctuations across the period. A more selective overview and clearer comparisons would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a generally understandable order, with separate sections for loan categories, member ages, and the decade-long trend. This helps the reader identify which chart is being discussed, and transitions such as “Now” and “Finally” signal movement between topics. However, the progression within sections is sometimes mechanical, and several sentences repeat the same framing, such as “it tells us” and “it also gives us.” Some references are unclear: “The remaining is about 1% or 2%” does not specify which categories are meant. Group related figures more systematically and use comparisons to connect them—for example, contrast the two 38% categories with the much smaller 1–2% categories. This would make the organisation more cohesive and less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “total loans,” “category,” “proportion,” and “approximately,” so the reader can follow the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural or imprecise. “The most lowest loan” is not an appropriate way to describe the smallest share, and “the lower age from adults is children’s” makes the intended comparison difficult to understand. Repeated phrases such as “it tells us” also restrict variety. Aim for precise chart language, such as “accounted for,” “represented,” “the smallest proportion,” and “membership was dominated by adults.” Check spelling and capitalisation of the place name as well, since it appears in several inconsistent forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, including sentences beginning with “as well as” and “Furthermore,” but most structures are simple, and complex attempts are often faulty. For example, “The most popular or proportion age is the adults from 18 to 64” has an unclear grammatical structure, while “The year of 2007 it had the lowest number of loans is only 15,000” combines clauses without a correct connection. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence construction in phrases such as “the year of 2010 or 2011 are the approximately among 21,000.” These errors sometimes make the meaning harder to follow. Practise forming accurate comparison sentences and use a wider range of controlled structures, such as “Loans rose from … to …, before fluctuating around ….”
