Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts illustrate data of a public library named Little Chalfont.

The pie charts shows breakdown of members by age. The bar diagram represents total numbers of loans taken from library over the decade, from 2007 to 2016, while the table shows percentage of different books categories loaned.

Overall, it can be observed that majority of library members are adults between 18 and 64 years old, and hence, the majority of bookings in 2016 are also of adult fiction at 38%. The number of loans reached highest at the end of 2016, indicating the library became more and more popular over the years.

It can be seen from the pie chart that nearly half of library members are adults between 18-64 years of age in 2016. Children are 22, accounting for a quarter of library members followed b Young adults and adults of 65 age or above.

As most library members are Adults and children, the loan categories of adult fiction and children's fiction has been the highest in 2016, both accounting for 38% each. The adult audio books and and young adults have been the least popular, which is obvious as library has a fewer members in that age group.

If we look at the overall loans taken over the last 10 years, 2016 and 2011 recorded highest numbers, slighlty over 20,000. There were very little bookings in the first year, 2007, at slighlty above 15, 000, which increased consistenly over next 5 years till 2011, after which the number of loans started decreasing again till 2013, reaching a number below 20,000. But the booking increased again towards the end of decade.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main features across all three visuals and provide a clear overview: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction leads the loan categories, and loans peak at the end of the period. Several comparisons are also relevant, including the equal 38% shares for adult and children’s fiction. This is a strong, mostly accurate response. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: “Children are 22” gives a number without stating that this is a percentage, and “a quarter” overstates the chart’s 22%. The description of the loan trend also says it increased consistently to 2011, although there was a slight fall in 2012. To strengthen the response further, report the age figures explicitly and describe the fluctuations more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and separate paragraphs covering the membership/category data and the loan trend. This gives the reader a coherent route through the visuals, and phrases such as “If we look at” help signal a shift in focus. However, some linking and referencing are mechanical or unclear. For example, “which is obvious as library has a fewer members in that age group” does not clearly identify which category or age group is being discussed, and the relationship between membership proportions and loan shares is asserted rather than carefully connected. The final paragraph contains several stages in one long sequence. Use more precise references and divide the trend into its rise, fluctuations and ending to make progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “breakdown,” “accounting for,” “categories,” “recorded” and “decreasing.” These choices help communicate comparisons and trends, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, however: “bookings” is not the right term for library loans, “books categories” is awkward, and “more and more popular” makes a stronger claim than the figures alone establish. There are also spelling slips such as “slighlty” and “consistenly,” alongside repetition of “number of loans.” Aim for precise chart language—such as “loan total,” “share” and “fluctuated”—and check spelling and collocations during proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “after which” and “as,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “The pie charts shows” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the loan categories … has been the highest” has a plural subject and an unsuitable verb form. “The adult audio books and and young adults” also contains a repeated conjunction, and “followed b Young adults” is missing a letter that disrupts the sentence. Review agreement between subjects and verbs, and use consistent past-tense forms when describing the 2016 data. Careful proofreading would remove several avoidable errors.
