IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart gives the information about the age of library members in a public library in a town (Little Chalfont) in 2016, while the table shows the pattern of total loans. Also, the bar chart illustrates the total number of loans of that library from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, the charts show demonstrate that the adults (age ranging from 18 to 64) were more likely to read books, whereas the people of 65 years or more were more unlikely to read books. Moreover, the percentages of total loans were mostly on children's fiction and adult fiction, and children's DVDs carries the less loans. Furthermore, the number of laons were least in 2007 and hughest were 2016.
In pie charts, the adults(18-64) library members, children, young adults (13-17), and adults 65 or over were 51, 22, 15, and 12 percent respectively.
According to table, the total loans of children's fiction and adult fiction were highest, 38% and least was children's DVDs, 1% only.
In bar chart, total number of loans were fluctuated over the period. In 2007 the number of loans were about 16,000, and then increased to about 21,000 in 2011, and reached to approximately 22,000 in the final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover all three visuals and identify several important features: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and loans rise overall from 2007 to 2016. The figures for membership and loan categories are accurately reported. However, the overview says adults were more likely to read and older people less likely, which the charts do not establish; they show membership proportions, not reading likelihood. The trend description also misses the fluctuations after 2011, including the dip in 2013 and subsequent recovery. Develop the comparisons by reporting the adult non-fiction share and describing the loan trend more precisely, rather than making unsupported claims.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the membership figures, loan categories and yearly totals. This makes the three visuals easy to locate, and phrases such as “According to table” and “In bar chart” signal the topic of each paragraph. However, the overview repeats points that are then restated in the detail paragraphs, and the sequence of yearly data is compressed into a simple rise, so the progression is not fully developed. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “Moreover” and “Furthermore.” Use more precise transitions and organise the time-series paragraph around its rise, fall and recovery to make the relationships clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “library members,” “total loans,” “approximately” and “fluctuated,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “more unlikely to read books” is not supported by the data, “carries the less loans” is unnatural, and “the pattern of total loans” does not clearly describe the table’s category shares. There are also spelling errors such as “laons” and “hughest,” alongside repetition of “number of loans.” Choose precise terms such as “accounted for,” “share” and “loan volume,” and check spelling and collocations to make the report more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause with “while” and a time sequence introduced by “and then.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the number of loans were” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the adults(18-64) library members” has an unclear noun structure and missing spacing around the parenthesis. The overview sentence “the charts show demonstrate” also contains a duplicated verb, while “the least was children’s DVDs” is not a complete, well-formed comparison. Practise accurate agreement, articles and sentence construction, and proofread each sentence for duplicated or missing words.
