IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA

IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graphs show the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars that are consumed in USA.

Initially if we consider the consumption of all three during the breakfast we will see sodium is less consumed than the fats and sugar overall. By a farely of a margin like it's just 1 precent less than the other two.

up next wee see during the lunch. the chart moves from left to right in a descending order. most consumption of sodium during the lunch and likely decreased intake in fats and less intake of sugars.

if we see dinner time period sodium is highly consumed 43% that's a huge quantity and it can cause several health issues. fats and sugars intakes are also high but not compared to sodium.

lastly snacks are really unhygenic if consumed in high amount they impose a health risk like cardiovascular disorders and obesity.

in conclusion i would say average american meals are very much of sodium intake and if they are not digested or workedout they would be life threathning. there should be a proper balance and a diet plan must be made and followed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the three nutrients and discusses meal occasions, but it reports very little of the chart accurately or precisely. For breakfast, sodium is 14%, compared with 16% for both other nutrients; saying it is “1 precent less” is inaccurate. The lunch and dinner comments broadly recognise sodium as the highest figure, but omit the actual comparisons, while the claim that snacks are “really unhygenic” does not report that added sugar is the largest snack share at 42%. The conclusion shifts to health advice rather than summarising the data. To improve, give a clear overview of the main contrasts and support it with correct figures, without adding unsupported health claims. (Nine words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows a recognisable sequence through breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and uses signposts such as “Initially,” “up next” and “lastly.” This gives the reader some sense of order. However, the progression is weakened by abrupt shifts from chart description to health warnings and advice, especially in the final two sections. Several transitions are informal or awkward, and the lunch sentence about a “descending order” is not clearly connected to the figures. Organise the report into a brief overview followed by grouped comparisons, and use linking phrases to show how the meal categories differ. This would make the structure more purposeful and reduce the impression of a list of separate comments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “consumption,” “intake,” “sodium” and “cardiovascular disorders,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range for describing data is limited, and several choices are inaccurate or too informal for an academic report. “Unhygenic” does not describe a nutrient percentage, while “huge quantity” and “life threathning” introduce unsupported judgement rather than precise chart language. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “farely,” “precent” and “threathning.” Build a more suitable range for comparisons, such as “accounted for,” “proportion,” “highest share” and “whereas,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentence forms, for example “if we consider the consumption … we will see,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and complex attempts are often faulty or unclear. Examples include “By a farely of a margin like it's just 1 precent less,” which lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “most consumption of sodium during the lunch,” which is a fragment. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, as seen in the lowercase starts “up next” and “if we see,” and several sentences run together without clear boundaries. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and use accurate comparative structures, such as “Sodium accounted for 29%, compared with 26% for saturated fat.”
