Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie charts illustrate the average ratio of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar intake in four typical meals in the USA. Evidently, dinner contains the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat.

looking first at a sodium , dinner account for the highest percentage at 43%, followed by lunch 29%. Both breakfast and snacks contribute the same amount 14% making them the least significant sources of sodium. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat. Dinner again has the largest proportion at 37%, while lunch represent 26%. snacks make up 21% and breakfast has the lowest figure at 16%.

The distribution of added sugar, however is noticeably different. snacks are responsible for the largest share accounting for 42% of total added sugar intake. Dinner contributes 23% followed by lunch at 19%, whereas breakfast once again records the smallest ratio at 16%

Overall, American tent to consume most of their sodium and saturated fat during dinner whereas added sugar is mainly consumed through snacks and breakfast contains the lowest levels of these three nutrients.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons between the three nutrients across the four meal types. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends, such as the dominance of dinner for sodium and saturated fat, and the unique position of snacks regarding added sugar. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons are logical. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology and avoid minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as the slight inconsistency in the phrasing of meal contributions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which helps the reader follow the analysis easily. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'evidently', 'however', and 'whereas', to link your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and could be more varied to improve the flow. Additionally, paragraphing is appropriate, but ensure that the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'illustrate', 'proportion', 'distribution', and 'intake'. The meaning is clear throughout the response. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'American tent' (should be 'Americans tend') and 'ratio' (which is less precise than 'proportion' or 'percentage' in this context). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'predominant', 'account for a significant portion', or 'marginal'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('dinner account' instead of 'accounts', 'lunch represent' instead of 'represents') and capitalization ('looking' at the start of a sentence, 'snacks' in the middle of a sentence). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas in several places. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence structure will help improve your score.
