Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts illustrates the proportion of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in the different meals which consumed excess could be bad for health.

Overall, sodium and saturated fat is consumed highly in dinner than other types of meal while least is during breakfast for both nutrients. Also, we got another nutrient which is highly taken during snacks and the least during breakfast.

In detail, During dinner we consume the highest amount of sodium which is 43% and least during breakfast and snacks.Having lunch, we get sodium 27%. Similarly, saturated fat is obtained highly in dinner which is 37% and least in breakfast which is 16%. During the lunch, consumption percentage is around one-fourth while snacks has 21%.

Now, added sugar is mostly found in the snacks than other types of meals occupying 42% whereas low amount of added sugar is found in breakfast which 16%. while consuming dinner, we get 23% added sugar and 19 % at lunch.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the three nutrients across the four meal types. You successfully highlighted the peak consumption times for each nutrient (e.g., sodium and saturated fat at dinner, added sugar at snacks). However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention that sodium and saturated fat are consumed highly at dinner, the summary could be more professional by avoiding informal phrasing like 'we got another nutrient'. To improve, ensure you clearly contrast the data points rather than just listing them, and provide a more cohesive summary of the overall trends observed in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'Similarly', and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. For instance, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs feels abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother, avoiding the repetitive 'and the least' structure used throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the necessary information about percentages and nutrients. You use terms like 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'nutrients' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'highly taken' and 'mostly found in the snacks than other types'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal language. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'high' and 'low' would also help demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. For example, 'The pie charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error), 'which consumed excess' (missing preposition/relative pronoun), and 'breakfast which 16%' (missing verb). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the correct use of relative clauses, and consistent verb tense usage. Proofreading for small omissions like missing 'is' or 'at' will significantly improve your accuracy.
