Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts represent the average proportion of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars which may be also unhealthy if consumed in excess in typical meals such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks eaten by the people of the USA.

Overall, it is clear that sodium and added sugar play major roles in dinner and snacks respectively, whereas breakfast has the least percentage among all three nutrients.

To begin with, 43% of sodium is accounted for by dinner, which is the highest percentage compared with others, while sodium is least consumed at snacks as well as breakfast meal which is 14%. 29% of sodium is consumed at lunchtime. In terms of saturated fat, during dinner 37% of people eat it, whereas breakfast has the least proportion (16%).

Lunch and snack account for 26% and 21% respectively. Around two fifth of individuals liked added sugar at snack meal. However, added sugar consumed at dinner, lunch and breakfast meals are almost similar which are 23%, approximately a fifth as well as 16% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. You have covered all three nutrients and the four meal categories. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that 'around two fifth of individuals liked added sugar at snack meal,' which misinterprets the chart as a survey of people's preferences rather than the percentage of nutrients in meals. Additionally, the description of the added sugar percentages for dinner, lunch, and breakfast as 'almost similar' is vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and that the interpretation of the chart's subject matter remains strictly focused on the nutrient content provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by nutrient. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'In terms of,' and 'However' helps guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the report. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed, particularly when moving between the different nutrient categories. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'accounted for,' and 'consumed.' However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, saying 'individuals liked added sugar' is inaccurate as the chart measures nutrient content, not personal preference. Phrases like 'least percentage' could be improved to 'lowest proportion.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise academic language that would be expected at a higher band level. Focusing on more precise terminology for data description will enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'added sugar consumed at dinner, lunch and breakfast meals are almost similar which are 23%, approximately a fifth as well as 16% respectively.' This sentence is clunky and lacks grammatical precision. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement in lists would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
