Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the percentages of three different types of nutrients, namely, sodium, saturated fat and added sugar, which are found in breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner in the USA. If the nutrients are consumed in large amount, they can lead to detrimental effects on the human body.

Firstly, the sodium's presence is very high in the dinner at 43% while it is only 14% in both snack and breakfast. In lunch, its quantity is 29%.

Secondly, the saturated fat is also high in dinner at 37% while unlike sodium its presence is 21% in the snack. In both breakfast and lunch, it's almost similar to sodium at 16% and 26%, respectively.

Finally, the quantity of added sugar is different from both sodium and satuarted fat. The snack contains the highest amount of sugar at 42% while dinner has the lowest amount at 23%. The lunch contains 19% while the breakfast contains only 16% which is nearly similar to both sodium and satuarted fat.

It can be concluded that, americans consume a lot of sugar in their snacks while the percentage of sodium is highest in the dinner. They need to eat a balanced meals to live a healthy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the key features of the three nutrients across the four meal types. You have successfully selected the main trends, such as the high sodium and saturated fat content in dinner compared to the high sugar content in snacks. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories rather than listing them meal by meal. For instance, noting that dinner is the most significant source for two out of the three nutrients would have provided a stronger overview. The conclusion is relevant, though it moves slightly into advice rather than strictly summarizing the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each nutrient, and a concluding summary. You have used transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the data. While the structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to avoid a repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental effects', 'quantity', and 'nutrients' appropriately. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'satuarted' and 'americans' (which should be capitalized). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Using more precise synonyms for 'high' or 'low' would enhance the quality of your report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear, and the errors present do not impede communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the sodium's presence' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'a balanced meals' (should be 'a balanced meal' or 'balanced meals'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but ensure consistent capitalization for proper nouns like 'Americans'. Overall, your control of grammar is solid, though more variety in complex sentence structures would be beneficial.
