Student answer (Band 7.0)

Three pie charts present detailed data about average rates of nutrients in the four main meals. The study focuses on sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in the breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner.

Overall, while percantangesof nutrients vary from a meal to another it is clear that breakfast is the lowest source of them.

In fact, breakfast averages at about 15.3 per cent of the income of all the three nutrients combined. More precisely it represents respectively 16, 14 and 16 of the average intake of saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. On the other hand, the remaining three nutrients contribute in more fluctuating percentages. For instance, even though snacks represent 42 per cent of the intake of the added sugar, which is the dominent source of it, it only represent 14 and 21 per cent of the sodium and saturated fat source. This is also true for both dinner and lunch meals but the dissparity is less dramatic as in the previous case of snacks. Dinner for example is the main intake source of sodium with 43 per cent. It is directly followed by lunch with 29 per cent. What's more, they also lead the saturated fat intake with the first and second positions. About sugar, their percentages slightly decrease in the added sugar intake with 23 per cent for dinner and 19 for lunch.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features and made relevant comparisons between the nutrient types and meal categories. The overview is clear and highlights the general trend that breakfast is the lowest source of these nutrients. You have used data to support your points, such as mentioning the 42 per cent for snacks and 43 per cent for dinner. To improve, ensure that the data points are always clearly linked to the specific nutrient; for instance, when mentioning '16, 14 and 16', it would be clearer to explicitly state which nutrient corresponds to which figure to avoid ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In fact', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' to guide the reader through the information. However, the paragraphing is slightly unbalanced, as the second body paragraph is quite dense. Additionally, some transitions could be smoother; for example, the shift from discussing snacks to dinner could be better signposted. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is generally effective, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the way data is presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disparity', 'fluctuating', and 'intake'. There are some minor spelling errors such as 'percantangesof' and 'dominent', and some word choice issues like 'income' instead of 'intake' or 'contribution'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data description and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate simple spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the remaining three nutrients contribute in more fluctuating percentages' (should be 'contribute to') and 'the dissparity is less dramatic as in the previous case' (should be 'than'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional errors that slightly affect the flow. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader, but more variety in complex structures and greater attention to prepositional usage would enhance your score.
