IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie-charts illustrates the average percentages of 3 nutrients that is sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in USA in 4 different types of meals. Also, over consumption of above mentioned nutrients will have unhealthy results.

Sodium and saturated fat had been eaten highest in dinner which added sugar in snack time. However, breakfast contained almost steady percentages of all the three ingredients.

Sodium was most consumed during dinner (43%) and it was equally consumed during snack and breakfast that is 14% each, though lunch contained 29% of sodium.

Consequently, saturated fat showed peak consumption during dinner (37%). On the other hand, it was least eaten during breakfast (16%). The snack and lunch did not show much variation in percentage values.

Added sugar was seen to be consumed more in snacks, almost half of the total consumption, while breakfast and dinner showed at approximate values of 16% and 19%, respectively.

Overall, the total constitution of the three nutrients during different meals did show range of variation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses the prompt by identifying the main features of the charts. You have provided a clear overview and selected relevant data points to support your descriptions. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the nutrients across the different meals, rather than listing them meal by meal. For example, noting that sodium and saturated fat share a similar peak at dinner would strengthen the analytical quality. The inclusion of the 'unhealthy' context is good, but ensure the focus remains primarily on the data trends to fully meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief summary. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'On the other hand', and 'However' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of referencing and substitution to avoid repeating the names of the nutrients too frequently. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption', 'variation', and 'ingredients'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'total constitution' (which is not the most natural fit for data) and 'steady percentages' (when describing breakfast). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same verbs. Your spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without causing any confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie-charts illustrates', '3 nutrients that is sodium') and minor prepositional errors ('in USA'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'that added sugar in snack time'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
