Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The three pie charts illustrate the average percentages of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar contained in four typical meals consumed in the USA.
Overall, dinner accounts for the highest proption of sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks contain the greast amount of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast generally has the lowest pecentages of all three nutrients.
Regrading sodium, dinner makes up the largest share at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each account for 14%. A similar pattern can been seen for saturated fat, with dinner contributing the highest percentage share of 37% and than followed on by lunch at 26%. In contrast, snacks stood at 21%, while breakfast had the least amnount of share of 16%
The distribution of added sugar is different. Snacks have a substantial large amnount of propation at 42%, which is followed by dinner at 23%. Lunch accounts for 19%, while breakfast contributes the smallest share at 16%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided a clear overview. You accurately selected and reported the key data points for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across the four meal categories. The comparisons made between the meals are relevant and help the reader understand the data trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently provide a clear, analytical summary rather than just listing figures. You have covered all parts of the task well, and the information is logically presented, which demonstrates a good grasp of the requirements for Academic Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs focusing on the different nutrients. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'followed by', and 'a similar pattern' to link ideas effectively. However, there are some minor issues with mechanical cohesion and flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied and natural to avoid a slightly repetitive structure in the body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'accounts for', 'substantial', and 'distribution'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'proption' (proportion), 'greast' (greatest), 'pecentages' (percentages), 'Regrading' (Regarding), 'amnount' (amount), and 'propation' (proportion). These errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, the frequency of these spelling mistakes limits your score in this criterion. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling errors will significantly improve your performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The three pie charts illustrate...' and 'Snacks have a substantial large amount of proportion at 42%, which is followed by dinner at 23%'. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'than followed on by' and 'a similar pattern can been seen'. Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'substantial large amount of proportion'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for better control over sentence construction and grammatical precision. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help raise your score.
