IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pir charts compare information about the proportion of typical meals of three types of nutrients, which is sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in USA.

Overall, it is evident that saturated fat and sodium accounted for the largest share in dinner meals, and for snack it is added sugar, whereas breakfast meals represented the smallest share for all type of nutrients.

Looking first at sodium, it accounted for 43% in dinner meals, making it the largest segment. Lunch constituted 29%, while snack and breakfast have same proportion of sodium in meals with 14%. This was followed by, saturated fat, which made up 37% for dinner, and 26% for lunch meals. However, snack and breakfast represented 21% and 16% for saturated fat in it respectively.

By contrast, breakfast constituted only 16% in all type of nutrients, making it the smallest contributor. Meanwhile, added sugar accounted for 42% as a snack nutrient, which was considerably higher than saturated fat. Subsequently, breakfast and lunch meals contained 16% and 19% of added sugar respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You have correctly highlighted that dinner is the primary source for sodium and saturated fats, while snacks are the main source for added sugars. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data is presented more accurately; for instance, you mentioned that breakfast and snacks have the same proportion of sodium (14%), which is correct, but the phrasing in the third paragraph is slightly repetitive. Overall, you have provided a clear, accurate summary of the charts, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at', 'By contrast', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different nutrients. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'This was followed by, saturated fat,' and the repetitive structure in the final paragraph. While the progression is clear, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences would help elevate this score further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'constituted', 'segment', and 'contributor'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pir charts' (spelling) and 'all type of nutrients' (should be 'all types of nutrients'). Additionally, 'in it respectively' is slightly redundant. While you attempt to use more precise language, the occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on using more varied synonyms for 'accounted for' and 'made up' to avoid repetition, and ensure pluralization is consistent throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which is sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar' (should be 'which are...'), 'all type of nutrients' (should be 'all types'), and 'snack and breakfast have same proportion' (missing article 'the'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but you need to pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage to achieve a higher band score.
