Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three pie graphs illustrate the average proportion of three different types of nutrients (sodium, saturated fat and added sugar), which is harmful if consumed a lot.

Overall, sodium accounted for the highest consumption during dinner, whereas sodium eaten during snack and breakfast times was the same. Notably, saturated fat and added sugar eaten during breakfast followed a similar trend.

Sodium was comparatively taken the most during dinner, which was recorded at 43%.

In addition, added sugar with snacks was the second most consumed item, followed by sodium during dinner at 42%. Furthermore, sodium taken during snack time and breakfast stayed constant at 14%, which was also the least consumed in the given data.

Additionally, saturated fat was devoured the most during dinnertime, accounting for 37%, whereas only 16% was taken for breakfast. Moreover, added sugar was consumed highly during snack time at 42%, while only 16% was eaten during breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends and making relevant comparisons. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you state that 'sodium eaten during snack and breakfast times was the same' at 14%, but the charts show different values for these categories. Additionally, the statement that 'added sugar with snacks was the second most consumed item, followed by sodium during dinner at 42%' is confusing and contradicts the data provided. While you have attempted to summarise the information, the misinterpretation of the figures prevents a higher score. Ensure you double-check the labels and values before writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of information is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the comparison of data points becomes repetitive and lacks a clear flow. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to distinguish between the specific nutrients being discussed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'consumed', and 'accounted for'. However, there are some awkward word choices, such as 'devoured', which is too informal and inappropriate for an academic report. The repetition of 'consumed' and 'eaten' limits the lexical variety. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms or academic collocations related to data description. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Sodium was comparatively taken the most', which is an awkward construction. Additionally, there are minor issues with preposition usage and word order. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of your comparative sentences to improve accuracy.
