Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The three pie charts given below illustrate the average proportions of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar contained in four typical meals consumed in USA, namely breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.
Overall, dinner contributes the highest percentage of both sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks contain by far the largest proportion of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast consistently accounts for the smallest share of all three nutrients.
Regarding sodium, dinner makes up the highest percentage at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each contribute an equal 14%.
Moreover, saturated fat dinner makes up the highest percentage at 37% followed by lunch at 26%, while snacks make up 21% and breakfast has the lowest figure at 16%
Lastly, the distribution of added sugar is different from others two. Snacks are responsible for the highest proportion, at 42%, almost twice a number of dinners which stands at 23%. Lunch contributes to 19%, while breakfast once again has the smallest share at 16%.
In conclusion, dinner is the main meal associated with sodium and saturated fat, whereas added sugar in snacks consumed highest.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided a clear overview. You covered all three nutrients and made relevant comparisons between the meal types. The data is accurately reported, and the structure is logical. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more analytical comparisons rather than just listing the figures. For example, you could have highlighted that dinner is the primary source for two out of the three nutrients, whereas snacks are the outlier for sugar. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each nutrient. You used cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories. To improve, ensure that your referencing is precise; for instance, in the final paragraph, 'consumed highest' is grammatically incomplete and slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'proportions', 'consistently accounts for', and 'distribution' are used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'twice a number of dinners' (should be 'twice the figure for dinner') and 'consumed highest' (should be 'are consumed in the highest amounts'). While these errors do not impede communication, refining these phrases would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. The vocabulary is adequate for the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'others two' (should be 'the other two') and the missing verb in 'saturated fat dinner makes up' (should be 'for saturated fat, dinner makes up'). These are minor errors that do not affect the overall clarity of your report. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage in your comparative sentences.
