IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the average proportion of nutrients in three typical meals that may be harmful to health if eaten too much.

Overall, sodium is the most abundant that is added in the dinner, whereas breakfast contains the least proportion of sodium. Both saturated fat and sugar are in equal proportion in breakfast. Similarly, dinner contains the most nutrients in all three cases.

In dinner, 43% of sodium, 37% of saturated fat, and 23% of sugar are incorporated, which is the highest percentage among all items. Similarly, lunch contains 29% of sodium, 26% of saturated fat and 19% sugar.

Although sodium and saturated fat are under 25% in the snack, it contains the maximum amount of sugar, which is 42%. Furthermore, three types of nutrients are included in breakfast in the least quantity. An equal proportion of saturated fat and sugar are added, which is 16% and 14% of sodium incorporated.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons. You covered all three nutrients across the four meal categories. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively to highlight trends rather than listing figures. For instance, noting that dinner is the most unhealthy meal across all categories is a strong observation, but the description of the snack and breakfast could be more integrated. Ensure that all data points are accurate; for example, you mentioned '14% of sodium' for breakfast, which is a clear and helpful use of the provided data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', and 'Although' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to avoid repetitive sentence structures. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but some sentences feel like a list of statistics rather than a cohesive analysis of the trends shown in the charts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'proportion', 'incorporated', and 'abundant' are used appropriately. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'added' and 'contains'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'constitute', 'account for', or 'predominant'. Your word choice is generally accurate, and there are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'sodium is the most abundant that is added' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'the most nutrients in all three cases'. Additionally, the sentence 'An equal proportion of saturated fat and sugar are added, which is 16% and 14% of sodium incorporated' is grammatically confusing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your comparative structures are precise will help improve your score in this area.
