IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The above given pie charts illustrates the comparison of average percentage in typical meals (sodium, saturated fats and added sugar) consumed in USA.

In all the three pie charts, Sugar has the most consumption especially in the sector of snacks with 42% which is the maximum percentage in comparison to all three pie charts. After snacks, we have dinner with 23% which leaves not much of a difference between the percentage of sugar in breakfast and lunch, 16% and 19%.

Sodium and saturated fat's data has many similarities with no big differences. For example both sodium and Saturated fat are most used in Dinner. Following dinner, comes lunch with 29% and 23%. Which leaves us with snacks and breakfast, in sodium both snacks and breakfast are equal but in saturated fat snacks is more than breakfast.

To conclude, the date given above shows us that the most used nutrients in our meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by identifying key features of the charts, such as the high sugar content in snacks and the prevalence of sodium and saturated fats in dinner. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear overview of the data as a whole. While some comparisons are made, the report relies heavily on listing percentages rather than synthesizing the information effectively. The conclusion is also very brief and does not provide a meaningful summary of the trends. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, distinct overview paragraph that highlights the most significant trends across all three charts before moving into detailed comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'In all the three pie charts' and 'Following dinner'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between the data points and the categories is slightly confusing. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'most used' and 'not much of a difference' are functional but lack the precision expected in an academic report. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the above given pie charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the date given' (likely a typo for 'data'). To improve, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'predominant', 'account for', 'a marginal difference', or 'constitute'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'the above given pie charts illustrates' (should be 'illustrate') and 'saturated fat's data' (awkward possessive). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the sentence fragment 'Which leaves us with snacks and breakfast...' which should be connected to the previous clause. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments.
