Student answer (Band 7.0)

The three pie charts compare the average proportions of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar contained in four typical meals consumed in the USA: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Overall, dinner contributes the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks account for the greatest proportion of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast consistently contains the lowest percentages of all three nutrients.

Regarding sodium, dinner makes up the largest share at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each contribute 14%, making them the smallest sources of sodium.

A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat. Dinner again has the highest proportion, accounting for 37% of the total, while lunch represents 26%. Snacks contribute 21%, whereas breakfast contains the least saturated fat at 16%.

The distribution of added sugar differs significantly from the other two nutrients. Snacks are by far the largest source, comprising 42% of added sugar intake. Dinner accounts for 23%, while lunch contributes 19%. Breakfast once again has the smallest proportion, at 16%.

In summary, evening meals are the main contributors to sodium and saturated fat intake, whereas snacks are the primary source of added sugar. Breakfast consistently contains the lowest levels of these potentially unhealthy nutrients
