Student answer (Band 6.0)

The three pie chart illustrate the proportion of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar contained four types of meals consumed inn USA: breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.

Overall, dinner accounts for the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat consumption. Snacks account largest number of added sugar consumption. In contrast, breakfast generally represents the lowest number of of these three nutrients.

Regarding sodium, dinner makes the highest proportion which is around 43%, then lunch is the second highest consumption of sodium. Snacks and breakfast has the similar consumption rate which is 14%. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat. 37% americans consume saturated fat in dinner. In snacks they consume almost 21% and in lunch almost 29% saturated fat. The lowest proportion of saturated fat is 16% which consumed at breakfast.

Meanwhile, the figure for added sugar shows a different trend. People consume the highest proportion of added sugar in snacks which is 42%. Then breakfast and lunch follows almost similar trend. At dinner people consume almost 23% added sugar and breakfast is the lowest proportion of consuming added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the key trends, such as dinner being the primary source for sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate added sugar intake. However, the analysis could be improved by being more precise with data. For instance, stating 'breakfast and lunch follows almost similar trend' is vague; providing the specific percentages would have strengthened the report. Additionally, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating breakfast is the lowest for added sugar when the chart shows it is actually dinner. Overall, the main features are clearly presented, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific nutrients. You use cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In contrast', and 'A similar pattern can be seen' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some referencing is slightly repetitive (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'The...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different nutrients. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences feel more natural and avoid repetitive sentence structures. The overall progression of information is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'nutrients' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'contained four types of meals' (should be 'contained in four types of meals') and 'number of added sugar consumption' (should be 'amount of added sugar'). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'account for' or 'constitute' rather than repeating 'consumption' frequently. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly despite these minor slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The three pie chart illustrate' (should be 'charts'), 'consumed inn USA' (spelling), and 'Snacks and breakfast has' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are missing articles and prepositions throughout the text, such as 'makes the highest proportion' (should be 'makes up the highest proportion'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should proofread for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage, and aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
