IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts given illustrate information about the average percentages of three different nutrients consumed in each meal within the USA. These nutrients are: sodium, saturated fat and added sugar.

Overall, the greatest percentages of sodium and saturated fats are recorded in dinner. Conversely, the percentages regarding added sugar contradict this trend, as they are present in the greatest amounts in snacks instead. Across all three nutrients, breakfast contains the least amount of each.

With regards to sodium, meals consumed in dinner dominate the chart with the greatest percentage of sodium calculated at 43%, followed by lunch with 29% recorded. Both snacks and breakfast contain the least amount of sodium at a total of 28% equally distributed across each. A similar but not identical trend is seen when it comes to saturated fats. Once again, dinner holds the greatest percentage of saturated fats at 37%, followed by lunch with a mere 11% decrease. Snacks posses a slightly higher proportion of saturated fats occupying about a fifth of the chart, leaving breakfast with the least amount.

The trends regarding added sugars differ in comparison to the figures seen regarding sodium and saturated fats. Snacks are shown to hold 42% of added sugars, which is double the amount of saturated fat previously recorded. Dinner contains only half of the amount present in snacks with 23%. Lunch and breakfast secure the smallest proportions of 19% and 16% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with accurate data from the charts. The comparison between nutrients is well-handled, particularly the observation regarding the contrast between snacks and the other meals for added sugar. The information is logically selected, and the key features are highlighted appropriately. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are interpreted with absolute precision; for instance, your statement that sodium is 'equally distributed' at 28% for breakfast and snacks is slightly inaccurate based on the visual data, which shows slight variations. Overall, the task is fulfilled well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which helps the reader follow the analysis easily. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'With regards to', and 'A similar but not identical trend', which effectively link your points. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the general overview and the detailed body paragraphs is smooth. The structure is coherent throughout, and the use of referencing is clear, making the text easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'contradict this trend', 'dominate the chart', and 'secure the smallest proportions' show a level of sophistication. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'posses' (spelling error for 'possess') and the phrasing 'a mere 11% decrease' when describing the difference between dinner and lunch, which could be more precisely stated. However, the vocabulary is generally precise and contributes to a professional tone. The range is sufficient to convey complex information clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used complex sentences effectively to compare data, such as 'The trends regarding added sugars differ in comparison to the figures seen regarding sodium and saturated fats.' Grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of information. While there are a few minor slips, such as the spelling error 'posses' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'at a total of 28% equally distributed', these do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating good control.
