Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts presents the average percentages in considerable foods of three types of nutrients, all of which may have disadvantages if consumed a lot. This charts show the nutrients that are consumed in breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner.

Overall, dinner hold for the largest proportions of both sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks contain by far the highest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast consistently represents one of the smallest shares for all three nutrients.

Regarding sodium, dinner makes up the highest proportion, at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each account for only 14%. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat, with dinner again having the largest share at 37%, while lunch contributes 26% and snacks 21%. Breakfast has the lowest proportion, at 16%.

The distribution of added sugar is noticeably different. Snacks are responsible for the largest proportion, at 42%, which is almost twice the figure for dinner, at 23%. Lunch accounts for 19%, while breakfast has the smallest share, at 16%. Thus, although dinner is the main source of sodium and saturated fat, snacks are the dominant source of added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons between the three nutrients across the four meal types. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends, such as dinner being the primary source of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate added sugar intake. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons are logical and well-supported by the figures provided. You have met the requirements of the task by summarizing the information concisely while maintaining a formal tone appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. The introduction sets the context, followed by a concise overview, and then two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Regarding', 'A similar pattern', and 'Thus' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different nutrients, which helps in maintaining clarity. The flow of information is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall summary without unnecessary repetition.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for describing data, such as 'proportions', 'consistently', 'distribution', and 'dominant source'. The word choices are generally precise and contribute to a formal academic style. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'considerable foods' (which is slightly unnatural) and the subject-verb agreement error in the first sentence ('The pie charts presents'). However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring perfect subject-verb agreement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'The pie charts presents' (should be 'present') and 'This charts show' (should be 'These charts show'). Despite these occasional errors, the control of grammar is strong, and the meaning is always clear. The use of complex structures, such as the concessive clause 'although dinner is the main source...', shows a good command of sentence variety.
