Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts show the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and sugars in daily meals consumed in the United States America.

Overall, dinner contains the highest percentage of sodium, followed closely by snacks with added sugar . On the other hand, breakfast presents an equal percentage of added sugar and saturated fat, with the percentage of sodium in snack been the lowest.

Dinner has the highest percentage of sodium peaking at about 43% , which is slightly followed closely by that saturated fat(37%), the percentage of added sugar in snacks is the highest among all three peaking at 42%, and 21% in saturated fat. Conversely, snacks account for the lowest percentage of sodium at 14%.

Breakfast of both saturated fat and sugar stays at an equal percentage of 16% respectively. The percentage of sodium in lunch sits at 29%, with saturated fats at 26% but the percentage of sugar in lunch is decreased to about 19%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the highest and lowest percentages for each nutrient across the meal types. However, the report contains some factual inaccuracies regarding the data provided in the charts (e.g., stating sodium in snacks is the lowest at 14%, when the chart shows it is actually higher than other categories in some instances, or misinterpreting the breakfast data). To improve, ensure that your data extraction is precise and that you double-check the figures against the visual information before writing. The overview is present but could be more clearly defined to highlight the most significant trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the specific data. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'Conversely' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. For instance, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disjointed, which impacts the overall progression of the information. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus will enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'percentages', 'nutrients', and 'consumed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'slightly followed closely by' and 'peaking at about 43%'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary to describe trends and comparisons, such as 'account for', 'constitute', or 'a significant proportion'. Avoid repeating the same structures when describing the data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'percentage of sodium in snack been the lowest' (should be 'being') and 'Breakfast of both saturated fat and sugar stays at an equal percentage'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and parentheses. These errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing statistical data. Proofreading for minor slips in tense and word form will help increase your accuracy.
