Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts illustrate the proportion of three sorts of nutrients found in daily meals, which can be unhealthy if consumed too much.

Overall, it is evident that, the proportion of sodium and saturated fat is largest in dinner, while snacks have the highest content of added sugar. The distribution of all three nutrients in breakfast in broadly consistent.

To begin with, dinner accounts for the most substantial intake of both sodium and saturated fats of 43% and 37% respectively, alongside nearly a quarter of added sugars. Lunch shows a similar pattern, comprising 29% of sodium, 26% of saturated fat and 19% of added sugar.

In contrast, snacks represent the dominant source of added sugar at 42%, while contributing 21% of saturated fats and 14% of sodium. Finally, breakfast consistently supplies the lowest amounts across all three categories, making up only 14% of sodium and 16% in both fat and sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You have clearly highlighted the key trends, such as dinner being the primary source for sodium and saturated fats, and snacks being the dominant source of added sugar. The overview is concise and captures the essence of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully accurate; for instance, you mentioned breakfast is 'broadly consistent' in distribution, which is a bit vague. Providing a slightly more detailed comparison between the categories would further strengthen the analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'Finally' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different meal types. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth. To improve, you could vary your linking phrases slightly more to avoid a mechanical feel, but overall, the structure is very sound.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately, including terms like 'proportion', 'substantial intake', 'dominant source', and 'consistently supplies'. The word choices are appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. To aim for a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to data description, such as 'predominant', 'marginal', or 'constitutes the bulk of'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates good control over a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. For example, the use of 'alongside' and 'while contributing' shows an ability to combine clauses effectively. There is a minor error in the second paragraph: 'the proportion of sodium and saturated fat is largest in dinner' should ideally be 'the largest in dinner' or 'largest at dinner'. Overall, the grammar is strong and does not impede communication.
