Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts compare the consumption of three nutrients such as sodium, saturated fats along the added sugars in all four meals of american's diet.Overall it can be seen that dinners contributed the highest for the intake of sodium and fats in meals whereas snacks seemed to be the dominant factor in consumption in added sugars. However breakfasts and the lunch accounted for the smallest or nearly smallest proportion for intake of all these nutrients.Looking first at sodium intake dinner contributed the 43% of the proportion followed by the lunch as 29%.Furthermore the breakfast and snacks remained equal as source of sodium intake.By contrast to sodium the saturated fats showed a similar pattern of intake in dinner meals followed by a proportion of lunch as 26%.Additionally the breakfast and the snacks showed a slight increase in intake of saturated fast unlike sodium. For added sugars the snacks held the highest proportion of intake. In comparison to sodium and saturated fats dinners showed a decline in sugar intake but the breakfast and lunch were still the least contributor of sugar intake in the diet of Americans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. You have clearly highlighted the dominant nutrients for each meal type, such as dinner for sodium and saturated fats, and snacks for added sugars. However, the report could be improved by including more precise data points to support your comparisons. For instance, while you mention percentages for dinner and lunch, the data for breakfast and snacks is sometimes described vaguely. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key features are supported by specific figures from the charts, and avoid minor inaccuracies like stating breakfast and snacks were equal for sodium when the charts show slight differences.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with an introduction followed by body paragraphs that group information by nutrient. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'By contrast', and 'Additionally' to connect ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire response is written as one block of text, which hinders readability. To improve, you should break the text into distinct paragraphs for the introduction, body, and overview. Additionally, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother to ensure a more natural progression of information throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'contributed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'saturated fast' (instead of 'fats') and 'along the added sugars' (which is grammatically awkward). There is also a tendency to repeat words like 'intake' and 'proportion' frequently. To achieve a higher score, try to vary your vocabulary by using synonyms and ensure that your word choices are precise and contextually appropriate. Focusing on accurate collocations will also help improve the overall quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'the lunch', 'the breakfast') and prepositions. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'dinner contributed the 43% of the proportion'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and subject-verb agreement. Proofreading for small errors like 'american's diet' (should be 'Americans' diet') will also help you demonstrate better control over your writing.
