Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the three nutrients and their percentages across the four meal types. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score. The data is presented in a somewhat mechanical, list-like fashion, focusing on individual figures rather than synthesizing the information to highlight significant comparisons or contrasts. For instance, noting that snacks are the primary source of added sugar is a good observation, but the overall analysis remains descriptive rather than analytical. To improve, you should group information more effectively and provide a clear summary of the most striking features at the beginning or end of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. A standard IELTS report should have a clear introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs for different categories or trends. While there is some attempt at logical sequencing, the lack of paragraphing and the limited use of cohesive devices make the flow feel mechanical. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures and repetitive transitions. To improve, use paragraph breaks to separate your introduction/overview from your detailed analysis, and incorporate a wider range of linking words such as 'in contrast,' 'furthermore,' or 'conversely' to connect your ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choice, such as 'unconcious for health' (likely meaning 'unhealthy' or 'harmful'), 'ingest' (used incorrectly as a verb for percentages), and 'gulp' (which is too informal and inaccurate for a data report). You also repeat the word 'consumed' frequently. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology. Avoid informal verbs and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'The charts given illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error), 'In United State of America' (missing article), and 'sodium gulp most other than two' (incorrect phrasing and grammar). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Proofreading for these common errors before finishing your task will significantly improve your score.
