Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the charts regarding the average percentages of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in US meals. While it identifies some key data points, such as dinner accounting for the largest amount of sodium and saturated fat, and snacks having the highest percentage of added sugar, the overview and data selection are somewhat confused and poorly structured. For instance, sentences like 'There are slightly differance in breakfast and sodium that contain 14%' are confusing and fail to accurately report the values. The student attempts to make comparisons, but the lack of clarity in grouping and reporting data prevents a fully developed response. Therefore, this performance aligns closely with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organised into three paragraphs, including an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow due to poor logical sequencing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, as seen in abrupt shifts between data points without clear transitions. Referencing is frequently unclear, such as when referring to 'other' or 'that'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the body paragraph is highly mechanical and hard to parse. This corresponds to the Band 5 descriptors, where organisation is present but overall progression and cohesive devices are inadequate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms directly from the prompt like 'average percentages', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'added sugar'. There are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'inllutrate' for illustrate, 'propotion' for proportion, 'comsumed' for consumed, 'differance' for difference, and 'vlaue' for value. These lexical errors and limitations mean the range is restricted, and occasional inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader. This performance sits comfortably at Band 5 for Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'Dinner accounted for largest amount' and 'the snack contain'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and periods, and comma splices in sentences like 'Overall,Dinner accounted for largest amount of sodium and saturated fat while the snack contain the highest percentage of added sugar that is being comsumed in the USA.There are...'. These persistent errors can cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar score at Band 5.
