IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The above chat represents different meals with different kinds of nutrients consumed accross the US.
Overall, the pie charts represent three kinds of nutrients with Dinner having the highest percentage of all the nutrients except for added sugar. Breakfast has the least percentage in all nutrients.
Snacks and breakfasts have the least content of sodium which has exactly 14 percent but dinner has the largest content of sodium with 43 percent and lunch, about a third.
In saturated fat, snacks and breakfast were the least again and dinner with slightly above a third and lunch with slightly above a quater.
In added sugar, dinner recorded almost a quater of all added sugar and snacks coming highest with less than ten percent to almost make it half of all added sugar consumed by Americans. Breakfast and lunch recorded 16 and 19 percent respectively of the amount of added sugar consumed.
Snacks has always been the least or second to the least in sodium and saturated fat consumption but highest with less than 10 percent to make it half of all consumed added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all three charts well, identifying key features and making comparisons between nutrients and meals. An overview is present, noting that dinner generally has the highest percentages and breakfast the lowest. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting specific data. For instance, the student states that snacks and breakfasts have 'exactly 14 percent' of sodium, whereas breakfast is 14% and snacks are also 14%, but lunch is 29% and dinner is 43%. Furthermore, the description of added sugar in relation to snacks is confusing and mathematically imprecise ('highest with less than ten percent to almost make it half'). Despite these data interpretation flaws, all parts of the prompt are addressed, supporting a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, dividing the information into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each nutrient. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with several very short single-sentence paragraphs. Cohesive devices are occasionally used (e.g., 'In saturated fat', 'In added sugar'), but referencing and logical progression can be mechanical or confusing, as seen in the final paragraph which repeats points about snacks. Paragraphing and logical flow require tighter control to achieve a higher band score, making Band 6.0 an appropriate rating.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting standard reporting terms such as 'percentage', 'consumption', 'highest', and 'lowest'. There are some vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'accross' instead of 'across' and 'quater' instead of 'quarter'. Additionally, some expressions lack precision or clarity, such as describing added sugar proportions. The lexical range allows the student to communicate the main message, but lack of flexibility and occasional inaccuracies place it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The above chat represents different meals...' and 'Snacks has always been the least...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Snacks has') and prepositional mistakes. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though sentences are sometimes run-on or lack necessary commas. These errors do not seriously impede communication, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.
