Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts and making relevant comparisons. The introduction correctly identifies the subject matter, and the overview captures the highest contributors for each nutrient. Key data points, such as dinner being the highest source of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), and snacks leading in added sugar (42%), are accurately cited. However, the response includes unnecessary personal commentary and unsupported opinions in the final paragraph, stating that 'Dinner must be lightweight... It makes individuals obese,' which detracts slightly from the objective tone expected in Academic Task 1. Nevertheless, all primary visual data requirements are fulfilled.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, providing a logical progression overall. However, paragraphing and sentence-level cohesion are occasionally awkward or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Firstly, from breakfast...' is clumsy, and repetitive referencing occurs (e.g., repeating 'snacks' and 'nutrients' closely together). Logical connectors are used, but some phrases are disjointed or lack smooth integration, such as the abrupt shift in the final paragraph regarding lunch contributions and health opinions. Cohesive devices are present but sometimes overused or inaccurately deployed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'proportion', 'contributor', and 'consumption'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices and collocations are unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'snacks constitue of' (constitute) and 'larger contributor' (largest). Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor errors and awkward phrasing prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The inclusion of personal opinions also slightly misapplies academic register, though communication of the core data remains clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The text employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure through conditional or comparative clauses (e.g., 'whereas snacks are the source of added sugar'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the response, including punctuation slips ('sodium, saturated fat'), capitalization issues ('People', 'Dinner'), and subject-verb agreement or prepositional inaccuracies ('lies in between 14% to16%'). While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they represent a recurring pattern that caps the grammatical score at band 6.0.
