Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features from the charts. The student accurately identifies that dinner accounts for the highest proportion of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks dominate added sugars (42%). The overview is clear, noting the relative similarity of nutrients at breakfast. However, the introductory statement misinterprets the data's premise slightly by suggesting these are nutrients people can eat 'without being unhealthy', whereas the prompt states they may be unhealthy if eaten too much. Data points are generally reported accurately, though minor phrasing issues appear. Overall, the task is well-addressed, fulfilling the core requirements of reporting main features and making comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement with information logically grouped into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Cohesive devices such as 'Interestingly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different meals and nutrient categories. Referencing is mostly clear, though the progression between ideas could be smoother in places. Overall, the essay demonstrates sufficient coherence and cohesion to earn a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, such as 'proportion', 'ratio', and 'comprised of'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'coinsists' instead of 'consists', 'satureated' instead of 'saturated', and 'soidum' instead of 'sodium'. The phrase 'snack percentile in various mixtures' is awkward and unnatural. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. Communication is not significantly impeded, but vocabulary control remains inconsistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at syntactic variety (e.g., 'Breakfast is comprised of 14% of sodium and 16% of saturated fat and added sugar which is lowest proportion...'). Grammatical errors are present, including missing articles ('dinner coinsists of highest proportion') and minor subject-verb agreement issues ('the ratio of all three ingredients are'). Punctuation is generally acceptable. While errors occur, they rarely impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
