Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the three charts, noting that dinner is generally the highest for sodium and saturated fats, while snacks peak for added sugar. However, the student copies a sentence directly from the rubric prompt ('The charts below show...'). Furthermore, there are several inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, claiming that sodium and saturated fat dinner proportions dropped in the added sugar chart. While some key features are identified, the overview is weak, repetitive, and lacks clarity. The data selection is superficial, and the interpretation is confused in places, which aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organised into short paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor sequencing and confusing transitions. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Otherwise, others meal stayed lowest in all of them.' Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and clear topic sentences. Referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow the relationships between the data points. These issues are characteristic of a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms like 'dinner', 'lunch', 'breakfast', 'snack', and 'percentages'. There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Dinner almost Dinner is most consume meals', 'fractuated' (fluctuated), and 'highest consume meal'. Less common lexical items are attempted but used incorrectly. Spelling errors ('fractuated') and morphological issues ('consume' instead of 'consumed' or 'consumed meals') are noticeable and occasionally impede readability. This demonstrates the limitations typical of Band 5 lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent basic errors. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are consistently faulty, such as 'Although, it has dramatically dwindling in the Added sugar chart.' Punctuation and capitalisation errors are pervasive, including comma splices and lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('overall,in the chart...'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are problematic throughout the text, as seen in 'breakfast and snack constant same'. These frequent, grammar-related difficulties that cause strain for the reader place the response firmly in Band 4.0 for grammar.
