Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the three charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in US meals, identifying some key data points such as the highest values (dinner for sodium and saturated fat, snacks for added sugar). However, the word count requirement of 150 words is not met, as the response contains only 140 words, which incurs a penalty. Furthermore, the selection of data is somewhat disjointed and lacks a fully developed, integrated overview. The description often reads as a mechanical listing of figures rather than a cohesive summary of main features and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the organization and progression are weak. Transitions between sentences and ideas feel mechanical and unnatural, such as 'First of all, first chart illustrate that sodium' and 'On the other hands'. Referencing and cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or inadequate, making the text disjointed. The opening and concluding statements are overly repetitive and fail to effectively structure the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student uses basic vocabulary and struggles with word choice and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'percentage is more high', 'saturated fast meal', and 'added suger'. There are also frequent spelling and morphological errors, such as 'suger' instead of sugar and 'fast' instead of fat. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a basic meaning, these noticeable errors restrict the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very basic and frequently faulty when complex forms are attempted. There are numerous grammatical and syntactic errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts gives'), missing verbs or prepositions, and non-standard sentence construction (e.g., 'There are different meals percentage such as snack 14%'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also handled poorly, causing regular difficulty for the reader.
