The three pie charts illustrate the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA.
Overall, dinner accounted for the largest proportions of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks contained the highest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast had the lowest proportion of sodium, whereas lunch generally had moderate percentages of all three nutrients.
Looking at sodium, dinner had the highest proportion, at 43%, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks accounted for the same percentage, at 14% each. A similar pattern can be seen for saturated fat. Dinner again represented the largest share, at 37%, while lunch accounted for 26%. Snack made up 21%, and breakfast had the lowest figure, at 16%.
Turning to added sugar, the pattern was different. Snacks accounted for the highest percentage, at 42%, which was almost twice figure for dinner, at 23%. Lunch represented 19%, while breakfast had 16%, making it the lowest proportion.
