Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the charts regarding the average percentages of sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars in typical US meals. The writer identifies some key data points, such as dinner having the highest sodium (43%) and snacks having the highest added sugar (42%). However, the overview is extremely weak, vague, and repetitive, stating merely that the percentages are 'different and separate.' Furthermore, the information is presented in a very convoluted and disjointed manner, lacking a clear, structured summary of overall trends. While data is reported, the lack of a proper overview and poor synthesis pulls this criterion down to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The organization of the response is severely hindered by poor paragraphing and a lack of logical progression. The essay is clumped into dense blocks with numerous mechanical and faulty cohesive devices, such as 'To ilustrate' and 'Consequently,In saturated fat shows in charts that...' Referencing is frequently unclear, and sentences do not flow smoothly into one another, creating a jerky reading experience. While there are some basic linking words, their misuse and the absence of a coherent overall structure place this response firmly in the Band 4.5 to 5.0 range. Band 5.0 is awarded as there is some basic organization, but progression is lacking.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on the words provided in the prompt (e.g., 'percentage', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', 'added sugar', 'breakfast', 'lunch', 'dinner', 'snack'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'condicts' instead of 'depicts' or 'illustrates', and awkward phrasing like 'have as same as both of them'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic data, though frequent inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for attempting some topic-specific terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex or compound sentences are frequently faulty (e.g., 'Moreover, the snacks and breakfast have the lowest the same percentage in sodium more than 14% and also the lunch having 29 % sodium in moderate percentage'). Grammatical errors are frequent, including missing articles, incorrect verb forms ('contain' instead of 'contains', 'have' instead of 'has'), and severe punctuation and spacing issues (e.g., missing spaces after commas and periods). These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
