Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the charts and making relevant comparisons. The response highlights key data points accurately, such as dinner being the highest source of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks dominate added sugar intake (42%). An overview is provided, noting that dinner contains the highest proportions of sodium and saturated fat while snacks account for the largest share of added sugar, and breakfast contributes the least across all three nutrients. The data is accurately reported and fully grounded in the provided visual reference.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information about each nutrient is grouped and introduced systematically, starting with a general overview and moving into specific breakdowns for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'In comparison', 'A similar pattern', and 'Regarding' are used effectively. However, the text suffers from poor paragraphing, as it is written as a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs for the introduction, overview, and body details, which limits cohesion to a Band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'distributed', 'account for', and 'contributes'. There are some noticeable spelling errors ('illusrate', 'nutirents', 'fa', 'luch') and punctuation issues (spacing before commas and periods). Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, and some less common phrases are attempted appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with varying success. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('dinner contain', 'snacks contributes'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('each breakfast and snacks represents'). Punctuation is frequently mishandled, with missing spaces after punctuation marks and stray commas. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching a Band 6.0 solidly, though it sits comfortably at Band 5.5 due to the mix of structures attempted.
