Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarising the main features of the three nutrient charts. An appropriate overview is provided, correctly identifying that sodium and saturated fat peak in lunch and dinner, whereas added sugar is highest in snacks, and breakfast generally contains the lowest proportions. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the 42% for added sugar in snacks and the 43% for sodium at dinner. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that lunch and sodium/saturated fat 'surges to more than 60 percent of meals' rather than combining to form the majority of the nutrients, and combining categories slightly clumsily. Overall, the task is well addressed, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paraphrase, moves into a clear overview paragraph, and then details the specific data in the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the analysis. Cohesive devices are employed adequately (e.g., 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'In contrast'), although some linking phrases are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Looking in the lunch and dinner meals'. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the comparison easily, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms such as 'proportions', 'significantly exist', 'predominantly found', and 'surges'. There are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'significantly exist' instead of 'are prominently found', 'less proportions' instead of 'lower proportions', 'breakfast contribute' (subject-verb agreement), and 'a excessive' instead of 'an excess'. While these lexical errors occur, they do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including missing pluralization or articles ('the breakfast contribute', 'The snack meal supply', 'and saturated fat' instead of 'of saturated fat'). Furthermore, punctuation is missing at the end of the final sentence. Despite these errors, the complex structures are generally understandable, and communication is rarely impeded, reflecting the descriptors for Band 6.0.
