Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the charts regarding the consumption of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in typical US meals. A basic overview is provided at the end of the first paragraph, noting that dinner accounted for the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks accounted for the most added sugar. However, the body paragraphs contain significant data inaccuracies, misreadings, and confusing expressions. For instance, the text states that 'The snack and breakfast had equal consumption of 14% of Sodium and in breakfast the percentage gotted different with 21% for snack and 16% for breakfast of sodium fat,' which is incoherent and contradicts the data. Furthermore, comparisons are often clumsy or mathematically imprecise. Because of these noticeable errors in data reporting and the lack of a fully developed overview, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, including an introduction with an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and confusing transitions. Phrases such as 'In detail,' and 'the other chart of added sugar had different condition according to the percentage from the first two as they had the most in dinner' are awkward and impede the flow of reading. Referencing is also unclear in places, making it difficult for the reader to follow which meal or nutrient is being compared. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak. This places the response firmly at Band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary ('accounted', 'percentage', 'consumption', 'dinner', 'lunch', 'snack', 'breakfast'). There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'unheralthy', 'record most for the dinner', 'percentage gotted different', and 'sodium fat' (instead of saturated fat). Spelling errors ('unheralthy', 'gotted') and inappropriate phrasing restrict the communication of ideas. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the topic, the frequent errors and lack of flexibility mean the response does not exceed Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms ('if any of them eaten too much would be unheralthy', 'the lunch had 29% of Sodium and 26% saturated fat in the lunch'), and run-on sentences with missing punctuation. Additionally, capitalization errors occur at the start of sentences (e.g., 'the other chart'). These persistent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.0.
