Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the visual data, identifying several specific figures from the charts such as 43% for sodium at dinner and 42% for added sugar in snacks. However, the overview is extremely weak, repetitive, and lacks clarity regarding the overall trends. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in categorising the data; for example, the student states that 29% of sodium occurred in breakfast, whereas the chart shows this figure belongs to lunch. The student also includes personal advice in the final sentences, which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Because the information is partially inaccurate and lacks a well-developed overview, this response falls under Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall organisation and progression are poor. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, resulting in a disjointed text. Phrases like 'To began with' and 'Additionally, like' are used incorrectly and create awkward transitions between sentences. The referencing is often unclear, particularly when the student lists multiple percentages without clearly linking them back to the specific nutrient and meal categories. There is no clear logical progression guiding the reader through the comparison of the three charts, which is characteristic of a Band 4.0 to 4.5 performance, meriting a Band 4.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical range is extremely limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms such as 'nutrients', 'meal', 'percent', and 'sodium'. There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'proportion of percentages', 'usual meals eat', and 'most least amount'. Spelling and morphological errors are also present, including 'began' instead of 'begin' and 'eaten' instead of 'eat'. The vocabulary used is barely adequate to communicate the basic meaning of the data, restricting the score to Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of fragmented or poorly constructed simple and complex sentence forms. There are frequent and severe errors in grammar, tense usage, and sentence structure throughout the response, such as 'these three different nutrients was consumed', 'most eaten nutrients in different meal like', and 'If you eaten too much than was not good for your health'. These errors frequently cause strain and confusion for the reader, aligning the grammar performance closely with the Band 4.5 descriptors.
