Student answer (Band 6.0)

In detail, sodium and saturated fat record most for the dinner with 43% and 37% respectively, while the lunch had 29% of sodium and 26% saturated fat in the lunch. The snack and breakfast had equal consumption of 14% of Sodium and in breakfast the percentage got different with 21% for snack and 16% for breakfast of sodium fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar consumption. An overview is present at the end of the first paragraph, correctly noting that dinner accounts for the highest percentages in sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate in added sugar. Key data comparisons are provided, such as dinner recording 43% for sodium and 37% for saturated fat, and snacks accounting for 42% of added sugar. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings in data reporting, such as confusing saturated fat and sodium in the second paragraph ('14% of Sodium and in breakfast the percentage got different with 21% for snack and 16% for breakfast of sodium fat'). Overall, it addresses the prompt adequately and meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged coherently with a recognizable structure, including an introductory paragraph containing the overview, followed by two body paragraphs detailing the charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'In detail', 'while', and 'The other chart', but referencing is occasionally faulty or mechanical, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. For instance, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph ('The snack and breakfast had equal consumption...') is jarring and hard to follow. While the overall arrangement makes logical sense, the mechanical referencing and confusing cohesive links place this criterion firmly at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrate', 'percentage', 'consumption', and 'declined'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'unheralthy' instead of unhealthy, and 'sodium fat' instead of saturated fat. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some inaccuracy. While these lexical errors do not severely impede communication because the context of nutritional data is clear, they reflect a Band 5.5 or 6.0 level. Because the range is adequate to convey the core data despite the errors, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several awkward structures and missing prepositions, such as 'dinner accounted for the most in sodium', 'snacks accounted the most percentage', and 'with little less then lunch' (where 'then' should be 'than'). Punctuation and phrasing errors are frequent enough to cause momentary difficulty for the reader, though they do not completely obscure meaning. The presence of these recurring structural and agreement errors limits the score to a Band 5.5.
