Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the data from the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar consumption in typical US meals. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, identifying dinner as the highest for sodium and saturated fat, and snacks for added sugar. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in reporting specific data points. For instance, the student states that snacks and breakfast intake for sodium are '14% both' (which is correct for breakfast and snack separately at 14%, but phrasing is awkward), and misstates saturated fat percentages for snacks and breakfast as 21% and 16% respectively (while correct, the phrasing 'consume the low portion' is imprecise). Furthermore, the overview and body paragraphs contain awkward phrasing that obscures precise comparisons. The task is addressed, but the inaccuracies in data transcription and underdeveloped comparative analysis place this firmly in the Band 5.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into four short paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and confusing transitions. Words like 'Primarily,' 'Beyond this,' and 'Whether' are used incorrectly or mechanically, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Referencing is also faulty, such as in the conclusion where 'whether dinner and lunch' is used instead of 'while dinner and lunch.' Paragraphing structure is present, but overall cohesion is inadequate and repetitive, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 5 response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and frequently inappropriate for an academic task. The student relies on repetitive and basic terms such as 'intake,' 'consume,' 'portion,' and 'shares.' There are severe word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'normal percentage of meals who people intake how much,' 'people eat to much snacks that are high added sugars,' and 'dinner consume more sodium.' Furthermore, terms are misused grammatically as verbs or nouns interchangeably. These noticeable lexical errors and limitations cause considerable difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 4.5 or 5.0 descriptors; a score of 5.0 is awarded as meaning can be extracted with effort.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are almost entirely faulty. Examples of severe grammatical errors include 'The pie charts compares,' 'meals who people intake how much sodium... this is unhealthy who eaten more,' 'dinner consume more sodium around 43% while the sodium add in also lunch probably 29%,' and 'snacks highly portion of intake sugar.' Subject-verb agreement, active/passive voice confusion, and incorrect relative clause usage are pervasive. Frequent errors cause substantial difficulty for the reader and distort meaning, matching the Band 4.0 descriptors.
