Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the data from the three pie charts regarding sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in typical meals in the USA. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, standing at only 130 words, which incurs a penalty under Task Achievement. While the overview attempts to highlight main features (such as dinner having the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat, and snacks being highest in added sugar), the lack of development and insufficient word count prevent a fully realized response. The data is generally reported correctly with figures like 43% for dinner sodium and 42% for snack sugar cited accurately, but the overall task is only partially addressed due to brevity and limited synthesis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into three brief paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. However, logical progression is hindered by poor sentence structure, lack of proper punctuation, and a failure to use capitalization appropriately. Cohesive devices are minimal and often misused or absent, resulting in a mechanical and choppy reading experience. For instance, transitions between sentences like 'in the usa, sodium nutrients more highly in dinner 43%. in lunch time decrese to 29%' lack smooth connection. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs fails to guide the reader effectively through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently misusing word forms and collocations. Examples include 'are takes more in meal', 'more affect in dinner meal', and 'sodium nutrients more highly'. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'nutrients', 'sodium', 'saturated fat', and 'added sugar', but lexical control is weak throughout. There are noticeable word choice errors and awkward phrasings (e.g., 'droped', 'decrese', 'similar affects') that reflect a limited range and cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning closely with a Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical control is weak, with a very limited range of sentence structures. The response is plagued by missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and persistent errors in tense and word forms (e.g., 'this three piecharts illustrate', 'which make unhealthy', 'sodium and saturated fat nutrients are more affect'). Punctuation and capitalization are largely ignored, with sentences starting in lowercase and lacking proper terminal punctuation in places. Complex structures are rare and, when attempted, are heavily flawed. Errors occur in almost every sentence and frequently impede smooth communication.
