IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts illustrate the average percentage of three types of nutrients (sodium, saturated fat and added sugars) consumed at each meal by a typical American. They are major constituents of the average American diet, and if they are consumed above the recommended limit, they might be harmful to humans.

Overall, sodium and saturated fat are consumed most at dinner, while added sugar is consumed most at snack time. Breakfast accounts for the same amount of each nutrient, about 16 percent.

Firstly, sodium is mostly consumed at dinner, at almost half (43%). Lunch accounts for 29 percent and breakfast for 16 percent, while only 14 percent is consumed at snack time.

Secondly, saturated fat is also mostly consumed at dinner, at almost 37 percent. Lunch accounts for 26 percent, breakfast for 16 percent, and snack time for 21 percent.

Lastly, added sugar is mostly consumed at snack time, at about 42 percent, while lunch accounts for 23 percent and dinner for only 19 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the main features of the three charts. You selected relevant data points and made accurate comparisons, such as noting that sodium and saturated fat are consumed most at dinner while added sugar peaks at snack time. However, there is a minor numerical slip in your third body paragraph where you state that sodium breakfast consumption is 16 percent, whereas the chart shows it as 14 percent. Despite this minor inaccuracy, the information is generally well-selected and clearly presented, demonstrating a clear focus on the main trends and supporting data throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a solid introductory paragraph that paraphrases the prompt and provides a general overview, which is then followed by well-structured body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' guides the reader smoothly from one point to the next. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each nutrient category, contributing to an overall coherent arrangement. To move towards an even higher band, you could aim for slightly more varied transitional phrases rather than relying solely on sequential listing markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'constitutes', 'consumed', 'percentage', and specific nutrient names. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary and precise reporting language, such as 'account for' and 'mostly consumed'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies or slightly repetitive phrasing, such as repeating 'is mostly consumed at' across multiple paragraphs. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, but incorporating a wider variety of synonyms for proportions and trends would enhance your lexical range further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

Your response displays a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex forms effectively. You demonstrate good control over grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences throughout the text. Structures such as 'while added sugar is consumed most at snack time' and 'Lunch accounts for 29 percent and breakfast for 16 percent' are handled accurately. A few minor slips persist, but they do not disrupt the flow or cause difficulty for the reader. Maintaining this level of accuracy while incorporating more advanced subordinate clauses will help sustain your strong performance in this criterion.
