IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The pie chart illustrates an average percentage of 3 categories of nutreinets a meal usually contains which could result as unhealty if there intake is too much.

We see the that the intake in Breakfast and snack if Sodium is added it usually increase while in lunch and dinner we see there is a decrease as shown. Despite this the unhealthiness in Breakfast and Snack brings much concerns.

If we compare the Saturated fat and Added sugar in breakfast and snack the percentage remains the same but if Sodium is added the percentage usually declines which is a better sign in terms of breakfast.

But, if we compare it in the case of Lunch and dinner and if sodium is not added to it, it shows a huge jump in the percentage of it and becomes more unhealthy and these are the most time when thing are consumed in the entire day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the task requirements and fails to accurately report the main features of the visual data. The pie chart displays the breakdown of sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars across four meal types, but the student's commentary misinterprets the charts entirely, discussing nonexistent conditions such as whether sodium is 'added' or not. Furthermore, the figures cited do not correspond accurately to the source data, and the overview lacks a clear summary of the overall trends. To move up, the writer must select key features directly from the data, avoid confusing narrative interpretations, and accurately report the actual percentages shown in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation attempted through paragraphing, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The relationship between sentences and ideas is frequently unclear due to confusing referencing and illogical sequencing, such as the sudden shifts between meals and nutrient types without proper signposting. While basic cohesive devices like 'Despite this' and 'if we compare' are attempted, they are used inaccurately and fail to create a smooth flow. To improve cohesion, the writer needs to group related data logically, use transitional phrases correctly to connect ideas, and ensure that referencing pronouns clearly point to their intended subjects.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and contains noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are spelling mistakes such as 'nutreinets' and 'unhealty', alongside awkward phrasing like 'there intake' instead of 'their intake'. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to convey the intended meaning, and attempts at describing data trends lack precision. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary related to data analysis, improve spelling and word formation, and use terms like 'proportion' and 'percentage' more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on repetitive clause patterns with frequent errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'intake in Breakfast and snack if Sodium is added it usually increase', and incorrect prepositions and articles throughout the text. Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty and obscure the intended meaning. To improve this criterion, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses and forms, and eliminating frequent errors that impede readability.
