Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarize the charts, covering all three nutrients and their distributions across meals. However, the treatment of the data is somewhat limited and mechanical. While key features such as the highest values (e.g., sodium and saturated fat in dinner, added sugar in snacks) are identified, the overall comparison lacks depth and the progression of ideas is underdeveloped. Furthermore, the writer includes personal commentary and external assumptions at the end of the text, stating that high sugar intake causes 'weight gain, fat gain and also increase sugar level in blood,' which goes beyond simply reporting the visual data provided in the prompt. To move to a higher band, the response must present a clearer overview of the main trends without introducing unsupported outside knowledge, and provide a more fully developed comparison of the given data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some basic organization, beginning with an introductory statement and proceeding through the data for each nutrient. However, there is a distinct lack of clear overall progression and paragraphing. The entire response is written as one long, continuous block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and sometimes inaccurately, such as starting multiple clauses with run-on phrases like 'then in dinner it is' and 'at last 14% sodium is consumed in snack.' Referencing and substitution are weak, relying heavily on repeating words like 'nutrition' and 'percentage' rather than using pronouns or synonyms to link ideas smoothly. To achieve a higher score, the writer must divide the response into logical paragraphs and employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, relying frequently on basic terms such as 'percentage,' 'nutrition,' 'meals,' and 'consumed.' There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as using 'nutrition' instead of 'nutrient' throughout the text, and awkward phrasing like 'highest percent taken in meal.' Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the restricted range of vocabulary and frequent inaccuracies in word form cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next band, the student needs to demonstrate a more flexible and precise lexical range, incorporating less common vocabulary related to data reporting (such as 'proportion,' 'account for,' or 'majority') with correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and run-on clauses joined by commas rather than proper coordination or subordination. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to missing verbs, articles, and prepositions, such as in 'There are the three pie charts which shows' and 'Third nutrition it is added sugar.' There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('charts which shows') and missing relative pronouns or copula verbs. These errors require some effort from the reader to decode the meaning. To improve, the student must incorporate a wider variety of accurate complex sentence forms and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules such as subject-verb agreement and article use.
