Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially because it presents data with notable inaccuracies and lacks a clear, overarching overview. While the student attempts to report figures for sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar across meals, several specific statistics are misreported or confused. For instance, the text states that added sugar is '23% in dinner and 19% of added sugar used in breakfast', whereas the charts show 23% for dinner and 19% for lunch. Furthermore, there is no distinct summary or overview paragraph highlighting the main trends, such as dinner dominating sodium and saturated fat intake while snacks account for the highest proportion of added sugar. The reporting remains a mechanical listing of individual data points, which keeps the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with transitional phrases like 'In the first chart', 'Secondly', and 'And finally', but the response suffers from a lack of clear overall progression. The information is compressed into massive, run-on sentences that make it difficult to follow the logical flow of ideas. Paragraphing is not used effectively; the entire body of the report is lumped together into a single block of text instead of being logically divided by nutrient or meal type. Referencing is also weak, with repetitive and mechanical use of phrasing like 'used by USA people' and 'used at the time of dinner', which creates a monotonous structure and hinders smooth readability throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms and awkward phrasings such as 'average percentage use', 'dailys meals', and 'snaks'. There are noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including 'dailys', 'snaks', and 'saturated fatb', alongside awkward collocations like 'percentage usage of saturated fat used'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate word choices and frequent repetition of words like 'used' restrict the range. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the vocabulary control remains basic and minimally adequate for the task, causing some friction for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting largely of over-extended, run-on simple sentences joined incorrectly by commas rather than proper coordination or subordination. There are frequent errors in basic sentence structure, verb forms, and punctuation, such as missing main verbs ('Three charts given below shows') and incorrect prepositions ('in snaks', 'at the time of dinner meal'). Articles and plurals are also mishandled in places, such as 'in dailys meals by the people of USA'. These frequent grammatical errors and the lack of reliable complex structures cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of grammatical accuracy.
