Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the charts, such as noting that dinner is the highest for sodium and saturated fat, while snacks dominate added sugar consumption. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain inaccuracies regarding the data, such as mixing up the percentages or misstating details (e.g., claiming that 'only around a quarter of added sugar is consumed during dinner' when the chart shows 23 percent, or stating that saturated fat and sodium in snacks are 14 and 21 percent when the chart shows 21 and 14 percent respectively). The overview correctly highlights the broad trends, placing the response right at the threshold where all parts are addressed, but some details are insufficiently precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by meal type across paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'moving on the remaining data', and 'respectively' are used to structure the text, though some referencing and mechanical links are occasionally awkward or imprecise. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction from the body details, maintaining an overall flow. However, the progression between ideas can feel a bit mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'proportion', 'utility', and 'consumption'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'if they eat in an over quantity', 'toxic nutrients', 'similar in the breakfast', 'proption', 'particurlarly', and 'suagr'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect the limitations characteristic of this level. Expanding the repertoire of precise academic collocations and improving spelling accuracy will significantly enhance the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures like 'while proportion of sodium 2 percent minimum than these nutrients' and 'whereas, proportion of saturated fat added sugar is 3 and 10 percent particurlarly less than this'. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'in breakfast', 'in snack'), incorrect verb forms ('if they eat'), missing prepositions, and awkward sentence construction. Despite these errors, the meaning can generally be understood, and communication is rarely impeded, fitting the profile where grammatical control is mixed and frequent minor errors persist.
